Aboard the Thundercats flagship (Early summer in Fandom time)
[Continued from Part 2]
Tygra, Cheetara and Jaga raced into the sword chamber a moment later, their faces grave as they expected the worst. "Lion-o! Are you alright?" Jaga called out.
"Snarf took a few licks, but we're okay," said Lion-o, getting to his feet and clutching a weakened Snarf in his arms. "Slithe and Jackalman were here, but I managed to teach them a lesson about picking on people their own size."
Jaga looked back and forth between Lion-o and the Sword of Omens. "You used the sword?" he asked, sounding rather proud.
"Well, sort of. The sword pretty much did most of the work," said Lion-o. He caught sight of Cheetara smiling at him and looked down, blushing.
"Still, that's good work, Lion-o," said Tygra, patting the youngster on the back. "With Slithe ordering a retreat, we were able to send the rest of those Mutants back before they did too much damage. We should get back to the bridge and see how bad the situation is."
Judging by the look on Panthro's face, it was very bad. "Well, I've patched up the hole, and it looks okay," he said, activating a schematic diagram. "But our fuel cells took a lot of damage. We'll never be able to make our original destination, so I looked for alternatives and found one. It's not much as far as galaxies go --"
"It's dinky, that's what it is," muttered Wileykat.
Panthro shot a fierce look at Wileykat, but he continued. "See this third planet around this yellow sun? It's got a lot more water and vegetation than what we're used to, but the atmospheric compatibility reads at 96%."
"Atmospheric what?" asked Lion-o, scrunching his face up in confusion.
"It means we can breathe the air," explained Tygra. He looked at the ship's schematics and frowned. "It will take us years to get there, however, since we don't have enough fuel to use our faster-than-light engines. Will we have enough provisions to make it?"
"By my calculations, there's just barely enough light support for one person to make it," said Panthro, "but not enough for all of us."
Wileykit gasped. "That means we'll have to make the journey --"
"In the suspension capsules," finished Wileykat with a gulp.
"Suspension capsules? You'll never convince me to get in one of those, snarf snarf," mumbled Snarf.
"Oh, I agree," said Wileykit. "When in doubt, chicken out." Her brother swatted her on the arm and she turned to glare at him.
"But there's a problem with that, too," continued Panthro. "Our gyro stabilizer is faulty. That means the autopilot won't be able to guide the ship. Someone is going to have to remain behind at the controls."
"Is there another way?" asked Jaga.
"Yes," said Panthro, frowning. "The last remaining Thundercats perish in space."
"Then it is settled," announced Jaga. "You will all get in the suspension capsules while I pilot the ship. Do not argue with me," he added, seeing the others about to protest. "I am by far the oldest of you. Even though the suspension capsules slow down the aging process tremendously, some aging does take place. Even in suspension, I could not live long enough to complete the journey. So let's not have anymore talk. Enter the capsules!"
Cheetara and the Thunderkittens were teary-eyed, but they agreed that Jaga had always been the practical one. Snarf gave a feeble protest, but Panthro ignored his complaints, picked him up by the scruff of the neck, and put the snarf in a capsule. As for Lion-o, he rushed forward to embrace the man he thought of as a second father. "Good-bye, Jaga," he said.
"You must be brave, Lion-o. It is your duty," said Jaga, but he still hugged Lion-o back before helping Lion-o into a suspension capsule. He plunged the Sword of Omens into the deck plating near Lion-o's capsule. "The Eye of Thundera will be waiting for you when you reach your new home," he promised.
And sure enough, the Eye of Thundera watched over the young Thundercat lord, even as his suspension capsule suffered a partial failure in its systems. As for Jaga, he held on as long as he could, until his aged body finally gave out. He summoned the last of his strength to engage the autopilot before fading out of existence.
