lordofthecats: (Lion-o -- Facepalm)

He was in bed and should have been asleep, but Lion-o was wide awake, playing around with his cell phone (not dirty). Snarf, who was curled up at the foot of the bed, glared at him. "Just a moment," said Lion-o as Snarf opened his mouth to grumble once more. "I just need a few more minutes to book my portal back to Fandom."

"You should have done that earlier, but you still have plenty of time to do that, snarf snarf. We won't be going back to Fandom for a while, and little cubs need their sleep," Snarf whined.

"Aww, c'mon, Snarf! I just turned 15. I'm not going to be little forever," protested Lion-o. "And I've been trying to reach Portalocity since we first got home, but I've this is the first time it's worked. I've been having lots of trouble reaching them. Panthro said it could be interference from the geomagnetic instability, whatever that means."

"It means you need to take some more science classes when you get back to school," said Snarf. "I never thought I would want to leave Thundera, but I'll be much happier when we find a planet that is a lot more stable." As if to punctuate his point, there was a slight tremor. Snarf's ears stood up and he yelped.

"Relax, Snarf. That one was a lot gentler compared to the past few days," said Lion-o. "I missed Thundera while I was gone, but this place is feeling less and less like home. Everyone is so nervous…"

"As you should be, Lion-o, snarf snarf. Haven't you been paying attention in the council meetings? Our people are in serious trouble!" said Snarf, standing up on the bed and putting his paws on his hips.

There was a soft rumble, and the empty shelves across the room rattled. "Another tremor," said Lion-o, waiting for it to pass, but this one didn't end so quickly. Instead, it built in intensity as Lion-o and Snarf looked around nervously.

"This sounds bad, Lion-o," said Snarf, flattening his ears. "The tremors usually don't last this long."

Lion-o heard some sort of cracking noise and looked up. "Move! Quickly, Snarf," he ordered, bolting from bed bed. Snarf used his tail to leap of the bed as well, and a few seconds later, a piece of the ceiling crashed onto the bed where the snarf had been sitting.

"Lion-o!" someone shouted from the hallway. Panthro, Jaga and Cheetara ran into the room, with Tygra guiding Lord Claudus in a moment later.

"I'm okay," said Lion-o, dusting himself off. "Snarf's okay, too. We got out of the way just in time."

"There's reports of damage elsewhere in the Cat's Lair and all over the city," said Panthro, crossing his muscular arms over his chest. "These buildings were built to withstand moderate quakes, but the repeated succession of tremors has weakened the structure. It was only a matter of time."

"It will only get worse from here," added Tygra. "This is what we feared would happen."

"Then the time has come. We must start the evacuation now," announced Claudus. "We can't afford to wait for any more ships to arrive. It will be a tight squeeze, but we should have enough space for the remaining population of our planet."

"But we've got another problem," said Panthro. "We still don't have a replacement for that faulty gyro stabilizer on the flagship. We'll need help guiding the ship to safe orbit until we can reach escape velocity."

"We will need someone to operate the navigational beacon from the Cat's Lair," decided Claudus. "Jaga, take the rest of the Thundercats to the flagship and prepare for launch. I will join you as soon as I locate someone to operate the beacon."

Lion-o didn't know it at the time as he ran to join the others aboard their space ship, but it would be the last time he saw his father alive.
